Heffernan strikes gold in Moscow

Ireland’s Robert Heffernan produced a superb display to take gold in the men’s 50km race walk final at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow on Wednesday.

With the hosts having won both 20km walks earlier in the week, Mikhail Ryzhov and fellow countryman Ivan Noscov were expected to complete the hat-trick but it wasn’t to be as Heffernan proved unstoppable en route to the Luzhniki stadium.

The 35 year old completed the course in an impressive time of 2 hours, 37 minutes and 56 seconds to secure the title, becoming Ireland’s first male world champion in 30 years, with Eamonn Coughlan winning the 5,000 meters in 1983.

Ryzhov finished second while double Olympic silver medalist Jared Talent of Australia completed the podium.
