Usain Bolt regained his 100 metres crown in 9.77 seconds at the World Athletics Championships in the Moscow rain on Sunday.
American Justin Gatlin claimed silver in 9.85 seconds and fellow Jamacian Nesta Carter took bronze in 9.95 seconds.
Meanwhile, Tirunesh Dibaba regained her World Championships 10,000 metre title, after a six year break, with a blistering 59.96 second final lap to shake off all challengers and win her third title in 30.43.35
Aleksandr Ivanov claimed a third successive men’s 20 km race walk gold for Russia. The twenty-year-old becomes the youngest walk winner at a world championships. He was greeted by a loud roar of approval as he clocked a personal best 1.20.58
In the women’s long jump, USA’s Brittney Reese was the only athlete to break seven metres, winning an unprecedented third gold medal. Britian’s Sara Procter led the qualifiers but finished sixth.
Hot favourite Sandra Perkovic of Croatia won the women’s discus gold medal, adding the title to her Olympic gold of last year, and beating Melina Robert-Michon of France in Moscow.
American Ashton Eaton won the
world decathlon title after an impressive performance. He completes a spectacular hat-trick with Olympic gold and a world record last year.
