US orders evacuation of diplomats from consulate in Lahore

The United States government has ordered the evacuation of non-essential staff from its consulate in the Pakistani city of Lahore due to possible threat of attack. The State Department has also warned US citizens not to travel to Pakistan.

The move from Washington comes just two days after the United States ordered the evacuation of some diplomats from the country’s embassy in Yemen. US nationals were also told to leave the country immediately. It is reported to be the base for al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

A State Department spokesperson said the closure of the consulate in Lahore was due to a specific threat there.

A total of 19 United States diplomatic missions and those of other countries including the United Kingdom, France and Germany have been closed this week in response to the possibility of a terrorist attack.
