Italian authorities reckon a total of 500 illegal immigrants have had to be rescued from the Mediterranean in the last two days. It’s believed the calm seas have prompted the increase.
In one incident 85 people from sub-Saharan Africa were rescued on the open sea close to the island of Lampedusa. They were eventually taken to the island by the Italian coastguard.
