Syrian rebels have made important advances in their fight to gain further territory from the forces of President Bashar al-Assad. The reported capture of one of the country’s main military airports, Minnig, after months of fighting in the northern province of Aleppo near the Turkish border is a symbolic victory for the opposition. This comes following a string of defeats to the regime in central areas of Syria.
The capital Damascus also witnessed bloodshed late on Tuesday with Syrian state media claiming that at least 18 people had been killed following a car bomb blast in the pro-regime suburb of Jaramana.
The rebels have also reportedly launched an attack in the mountains near the coastal city of Latakia in a push towards President Bashar al-Assad’s hometown of Qardaha. They have said they have captured six villages.
