West Germany reportedly doped athletes

German Olympic Sports Confederation president Thomas Bach is calling for the early publication of a report which claims that West Germany’s athletes were systematically doped with government backing from the 1970s.

The 800-word document was put together by researchers at Berlin’s Humboldt University with Giselher Spitzer as the project leader.

According to researchers, the doping may even have extended to the team that lost the 1966 World Cup final to England and could have helped Die Mannschaft triumph in 1954.

The report was completed in April but its publication has been delayed due to privacy concerns and legal issues over naming athletes, doctors and politicians.
