Kuwait elections see Shia MPs lose out

Kuwait’s minority Shia MPs have lost more than half their seats in parliamentary elections. Liberals and tribal groups were the main winners.

There are no political parties in Kuwait and most of the candidates ran as independents, forming coalitions after the elections.

Voter turnout was an estimated 52.5%, higher than expected despite a boycott by Islamists.

It was the sixth parliamentary election in five years.
