Hundreds of thousands of people have turned out to catch a glimpse of Pope Francis, as he presided over a “Way of the Cross” service in Rio de Janeiro.
The event, said to commemorate Jesus’ final hours, was held at Copacabana beach as part of an international jamboree of young Catholics called World Youth Day.
In an address, Francis called on young people to ease the sufferings of the world. He addressed a range of issues, including hunger and crime.
Crime was also on the agenda earlier in the day when the pontiff met a group of prisoners in Rio. His message to inmates at was to embrace love and abandon all forms of violence.
Francis’ first overseas trip as pope will draw to a close on Sunday.
