Pope Francis has been greeted by an audience of up to a million people on Rio de Janeiro’s famous Copacabana beach.
He attended a ceremony for World Youth Day – an international gathering of young Catholics – as rain continued to fall into the evening.
Earlier in the day, the wet weather did not appear to dampen spirits, as Francis dropped into a favela neighbourhood.
During his visit to the area, he called for a culture of solidarity to replace what he described as the “selfishness and individualism” in modern society.
Francis is in Brazil for a week, with his trip centred around World Youth Day festivities.
The bad weather has forced organisers to move this weekend’s final events to Copacabana because a field where they were supposed to be held has become a mud bath.
