Selena Gomez is all grown up. The Disney star has just turned 21 and celebrated by releasing her first solo studio album.
‘Stars Dance’ features electro-pop and playful songs as well as mid-tempo ballads. Gomez said the songs reflect how she has felt in the last year, which includes her on and off relationship with Justin Bieber.
The actress and singer explained her motivation:“Genuinely, the whole record is me being a woman and wanting to explore that and being comfortable in my skin and my body, and exuding confidence — that’s genuinely what this record is about.”
The album is backed by her biggest hit-to-date ‘Come & Get It’ written and produced by Ester Dean and Stargate, who churn out hits for superstar Rihanna.
“When I heard ‘Come &Get It’ and I heard the entire record put together, once I did put it together, it just kind of made sense because it’s a slower, it has that vibe and I feel like people would be kind of thrown off by it because I have so many people come up to me saying, ‘I didn’t know you sing that song. It’s a little different than what you put out’ and that’s a great feeling. That’s what you want to do as a musician is you just want to kind of reinvent yourself,” she added.
Gomez has listed pop singer Britney Spears as one of the album’s biggest influences.
“I want to continue to surprise people. I think they have this perception of me and I am who I am — even right now — but there’s a part of me that definitely wants to explore that and be adventurous and have fun with my fans and mess with it because it’s fun to be able to be 21 and enjoy my music and enjoy where I am,” she concluded.
Selena Gomez will kick off her 56-city world tour in Vancouver on Aug 14.
