Crowds celebrate swearing-in of Belgium's new king

The inauguration of a new king – combined with National Day – has brought many Belgians out onto the streets of Brussels.

The monarchy supporters, many waving national flags, were all keen to catch a glimpse of King Philippe and his wife.

“The king embodies our union, our identity, our history. And it’s important to be part of it. Later, I can say I witnessed an historical event,” said one man.

Some of the royal well-wishers even came armed with presents, including a woman who brought a plant.

“It’s a little plant for one of the two kings, either the former or the new one. Or for one of the two queens, if I’m lucky,” she said.

After the festivities will come the question of what Philippe can do to unite the divided country. For many, even royalists, he is a man of mystery.
