Tito Vilanova has stepped down as head coach of Barcelona with immediate effect due to health reasons.
Friday’s announcement comes a month before the start of the new La Liga season.
Barca President Sandro Rosell confirmed the news of Vilanova’s resignation as well as the 44-year-old’s need of further treatment for throat cancer.
At the press conference Rosell said: “After evaluating the latest medical results from a routine check up Tito Vilanova is in need of further treatment to control the illness. Unfortunately this makes it impossible for him to continue as the head coach of Barcelona’s 1st team.”
Months after being named first team coach in 2012 Vilanova suffered a recurrence of throat cancer.
He missed two months of last season after travelling to New York for treatment after the relapse but still managed to guide the club to their fourth domestic league title in five years.
Barca are expected to name his full-time replacement by early next week.
