South Africa celebrates Nelson Mandela's special day

Former South African president and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela is 95 today.

While South Africans celebrate his birthday on what has now been designated as International Mandela Day, the much revered statesman remains critically ill in a Pretoria hospital being treated for a lung infection.

But hope for his recovery remains, and along with music and dancing and of course birthday cake, people are being asked to volunteer 67 minutes to charity in honour of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela served his community.

And a birthday would not be proper without birthday wishes lovingly given as from one little girl from Bertrams Junior School:

“Dear Tata Nelson Mandela. I wish you can get well soon. I wish you a happy birthday. Thank you Tata for what you did for us. I love you, I love you so much. Thank you!”
