Emirates Team New Zealand produced yet another flawless run to outclass Italy’s Luna Rossa on San Francisco Bay on Saturday in the first real race of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
Dean Barker’s men proved too strong for their opponents and led from start to finish to cross the line nearly five and a half minutes ahead of the Italians, who were hit with a penalty for sailing into the course boundary, forcing them to slow down considerably.
The Kiwis eventually prevailed in an impressive time of 43 minutes and 52 seconds, recording a top speed of 42.33 knots in the process.
The winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup will face reigning champions Oracle Team USA in the 34th edition of the America’s Cup which gets underway on Sept. 7.
