The political fate of the European Union’s longest-serving prime minister rests with Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri.
Jean Claude Juncker has discussed the unfolding political crisis with the Grand Duke, after the Luxembourg Socialist Workers Party, part of the ruling coalition, called for fresh elections.
Juncker, in power since 1995, has been implicated in a security service spy scandal, and accused of failing to curb the abuse of power by the service.
A parliamentary probe into the allegations found that Junker had limited control over the service, despite being the minister responsible and he failed to inform the parliamentary committee or the justice department of the practices.
The spy service is accused of bugging politicians, buying cars for personal use and taking payments in exchange for access to officials.
Junker denies any wrongdoing.
Elections, if called, could go ahead in October.
