Tensions are high in the Central Russian town of Pugachyov after former paratrooper Ruslan Marzhanov was allegedly killed by a Chechen teenager.
Hundreds of people have been protesting for days following Marzhanov’s death at the weekend. He was fatally stabbed, reportedly during a street brawl.
Some of the demonstrators have been calling for ethnic Chechens to be driven out of the town.
The police presence has been stepped up and there have been several clashes between officers and residents.
Regional officials have traveled to Pugachyov to quell the unrest. Local media is reporting that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has also sent an envoy to the area.
