Former US spy agency contractor Edward Snowden is at the centre of a has he or has he not accepted an offer of asylum from Venezuela.
It began with a tweet by senior Russian lawmaker Alexei Pushkov saying he had. But the tweet was deleted from his account shortly after it was posted.
There was no comment from the Venezuelan embassy in Moscow. Pushkov later tweeted saying he had seen the information on a state run television news channel. The channel said it was referring to the original tweet.
Earlier Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro offered some clarity on the ever changing developments by confirming he had received a formal request for asylum.
Maduro added it was down to Snowden whether he decided to fly out, but he was welcome in Venezuela.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Snowden should choose a final destination and go there as soon as possible.
