Pope Francis led a commemoration for migrants who lost their lives making the crossing to Lampedusa, a small island off Sicily. The United Nations estimates that 40 have died crossing from Tunisia by sea so far this year.
Speaking to a crowd of thousands, Pope Francis said: “Our society has forgotten what it means to cry with others, to empathise. It’s the globalisation of indifference, which has taken away our ability to feel.”
The visit to Lampedusa is the pontiff’s first official papal trip outside Rome since he took up his post in March.
