South Korea has requested working-level talks with the North on reopening the jointly-run Kaesong industrial zone.
Manufacturing at the complex was halted in April as tensions between the neighbours increased.
The industrial park is a rare example of North South cooperation:
Kim Hyung-suk from the South Korean Unification Ministry said:
“ Now we can begin a process of checking the equipment at Kaesong and discuss the movement of materials and hopefully normalise operations at the Kaesong plant.”
The complex is a major source of income for both countries, it is particularly important for the cash-strapped North with as many 53,000 North Koreans employed
The South wants the talks to take place on Sunday, the North has yet to respond.
