Near the presidential palace in Cairo, supporters of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi rallied to his side, just a few kilometres away from opposition protests.
June 30, is seen by both sides as judgement day for the president. His supporters want to ensure he stays in control for the remaining three years of his mandate.
“My message is to President Mohamed Mursi, the legitimate leader and winner of the first free elections in Egyptian history. I would like to tell him to keep moving forward on this same path, the Egyptian people have given you legitimacy and are all here to support this legitimacy,” declared Mohamed Omar, from the pro-Mursi camp.
Mursi’s supporters have vowed to protect the presidential palace if his opponents chose to attack. Opposition groups have planned to march there in the evening.
The make or break atmosphere has raised fears that peaceful demonstrations might turn violent as the day goes on.
