The team’s president Javier Cantero was forced to flee as fans called for his resignation and the scene turned violent.
Founded at the turn of the 20th century, Club Independiente was once considered one of Argentina’s big five football clubs but budget cuts and the loss of star players has made Independiente’s glory days a distant memory.
