Tax evasion and occult financing find citizens, governments, even the Pope at odds

The Cahuzac scandal involving the French former budget minister and evidence he committed fiscal fraud remain a thorn in the president’s side, as Hollande struggles to crack down on tax evasion and avoidance. France 2 television had this report.

With a dispute over hidden funds still embroiling Switzerland and the United States, a court in Geneva this week stopped the Credit Suisse Bank from handing over data on its employees to the Americans, setting a precedent, Swiss TSR television reported.

There is even a current of reform running through the Vatican. Pope Francis this week ordered a committee to investigate the activities of the bank of the Holy See. It’s supposed to get access to all documents, including those classified as secret. Spanish TVE television reported.

In Italy this week 41 football teams fell under suspicion of tax evasion and money laundering – infuriating Italians struggling with the recession. Some, in Rome, have even flipped the bad reputation into a tourist concern, RAI 3 reported.
