Police in Chile arrest students in education reform protests

Police in Chile have arrested more than 100 students as they moved to evict protesters from 21 Santiago schools.

The evictions come a day after massive demonstrations went ahead to demand free and improved education.

Carolina Toha is the Mayor of Santiago: “It is a very sad night. I think extra effort should have been taken to avoid this. I feel the government looked for a situation like this instead of trying to stop it.”

Authorities went in to clear the schools as they are due to be used for primary elections over the weekend.

The education row has being ongoing for two years now and schools and universities are regular targets for student sit-ins.
