The hospital in Pretoria where Nelson Mandela is being treated has become the focus of the world since it was announced his condition has deteriorated to critical.
What has been described as a “sombre” mood has descended on South Africans who have become resigned to the inevitability of saying farewell to the 94-year-old.
President Jacob Zuma told reporters he had visited the anti-apartheid leader in hospital late on Sunday but added few further specific details about his condition.
“Former President Mandela remains in critical condition in the hospital. The doctors are doing everything possible to ensure his wellbeing and comfort,” he said.
As leaders from nations across the world wait for further news President Zuma confirmed the visit by President Barack Obama to South Africa later this week should not be affected by Mandela’s deterioration.
