Demonstrators climbed onto the roof of the national congress building in Brasilia to protest over soaring prices and the cost of staging the next World Cup.

Thousands marched through at least ten of Brazil’s largest cities in a wave of discontent at what they see as the wasteful use of public money.

The protests have increased as Brazil hosts the Confederations Cup, seen by many as a dress rehearsal for the 2014 World Cup and the Olympics two years later.

Flagging up the billions in taxpayers’ money spent on new stadiums, protesters have also expressed anger about inequality and corruption demanding higher public spending on health and education.
