Losing your money to a bad investment, or having it eaten away by inflation is one thing – but having your savings literally eaten is quite another.
That is what happened to an elderly Chinese woman.
Given 400,000 yuan by her children – that’s nearly 50,000 euros – the woman didn’t put in the bank. Instead she popped it in a draw, inside a plastic bag, at her home.
Unfortunately six months later, when she went to spend some, she found termites had feasted on the cash.
Bank officials were able to salvage some of the notes, but say around 7,500 euros worth are gone forever.
