Central Europe continues to be inundated by floods, Hungary is the latest country to suffer from rising waters.
Not far from the capital, Budapest, in the village of Leányfalu, the water is now chest height.
Residents have been trying to save their possessions, but, for some, there is a note of despair…
“Just to stand [here] not able to do anything, we haven’t slept for a week, we have been packing, I really don’t know what I can say about it”.
The river is now higher than the roads.
The main highways are shut.
Some residents have been stranded, some saying, if necessary, they will swim.
Soldiers and firefighters are working to shore up the defenses, but it’s hard labour. Volunteers from all over Hungary have come to help.
