China: 199 killed in abattoir fire

At least 119 people have been killed at a fire at a chicken abattoir near Dehui in Jilin province, northeastern China.

A further 54 people needed hospital treatment, and more than a hundred are still missing.

Around a hundred people are believed to have escaped.

The fire started shortly after dawn when more than 300 people were reportedly working at the local feed and poultry producer.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

It appeared that the doors had been locked from the inside, and that fire exits were blocked or did not exist.

As the extent of the disaster became known, commentators started to wonder if the building had ever had a fire inspection. Workers said fire drills were unheard of.
