World number one Novak Djokovic came through a stern test against Belgium’s rising star David Goffin to book his place in the second round of the French open on Tuesday.
The Serbian top seed who is hunting a seventh grand slam title won battled through 7-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Djokovic moves on to a second round tie with Argentine Guido Pella.
German 12th seed Tommy Haas also progressed thanks to a straight sets victory over Frenchman Guillaume Rufin – Swiss 9th seed Stanislas Wawrinka beat Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands while Lucas Pouille thrilled the home crowd beating American Alex Kuznetsov.
