Djokovic tested in first round


World number one Novak Djokovic came through a stern test against Belgium’s rising star David Goffin to book his place in the second round of the French open on Tuesday.

The Serbian top seed who is hunting a seventh grand slam title won battled through 7-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Djokovic moves on to a second round tie with Argentine Guido Pella.

German 12th seed Tommy Haas also progressed thanks to a straight sets victory over Frenchman Guillaume Rufin – Swiss 9th seed Stanislas Wawrinka beat Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands while Lucas Pouille thrilled the home crowd beating American Alex Kuznetsov.

On a rain hit third day at Roland Garros home hope Marion Bartoli posted an opening round win against Belarusian Olga Govortsova

In a marathon three-setter Bartoli, a former Wimbledon runner-up, needed three hours and 11 minutes to dispatch her opponent 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.

Elsewhere 2010 runner-up Sam Stosur of Australia thrashed 42-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm, also through to round two are 16th-seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova and former world number one Jelena Jankovic who battled past Slovakian veteran Daniela Hantuchova.
