Trouble with the new 5 euro notes

Holiday-makers planning to travel to Greece this summer may be well advised not to take the new five-euro bank notes with them.

The new five-euro notes that began circulating earlier this month are not recognised by ATMs and automated ticket vending machines on lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro. The problem appears to be with new security measures.

According to technical support experts, a software upgrade is required in order for the ATM and ticket vending machines to process the new bank notes.

The Metro management will have completed the software upgrade by early June, so until then the notes will only be accepted at staffed ticket vending booths.
