Italy’s main trade unions joined forces to ask for more funds as the redundancy fund runs dry.
Gathering outside the parliament they called on the caretaker government to stump up another 1.5 billion euros to keep up payments to 700,000 workers temporarily laid off due to the crisis.
Emotions are running high as people despair over the future of their country. One demonstrator said he would strap explosives to his body to make a statement. “Despair can make you do anything,” he added.
Protesters also blame the current political stalemate for the worsening situation. Without a government since February, the caretaker administration’s hands are tied.
