Beppe Grillo’s Five Star Movement has conducted an Internet poll to see, which candidate would be the party’s choice to replace outgoing President Giorgio Napolitano.
And the winner is renowned investigative journalist Milena Gabanelli.
Gabanelli says she is flattered and will think it over:
Grillo was pleased with the outcome of the vote: “Milena Gabanelli is an extraordinary choice. I would have never thought that she’d get the first place or even come in the top five. But her choice sends a strong message. She is a woman, a journalist and against the ruling elite,” he said.
Grillo has urged the centre-left block led by Pierluigi Bersani to back her for president when the vote begins on Thursday in exchange for cooperation in a new government.
Choosing a successor to Napolitano will be a key step in the formation of Italy’s next government.
It will be the new president’s first task to find a way out of the political deadlock, which angered Italians and infuriated the EU.
