Venezuela goes to the polls to choose post-Chavez president

All is ready for the millions of Venezuelans who are likely to flock to the polls on Sunday in the first election of the post-Hugo Chavez era.

Loyalists squeezed as much political capital as they could from the 11th anniversary of the failed coup that marked the beginning of his reign, their last shot in what has been a bare-fisted campaign on both sides.

The opposition’s Henrique Capriles complains state funds have been unfairly used to boost Chavez’s successor, Nicolas Maduro, that former Argentine footballer Diego Maradona has broken rules by endorsing him – and that former bus driver Maduro has no ideas for solving rampant crime, inflation, and a slowing economy.
