Beijing has reported its first case of bird flu. It is the first time that the new strain of the virus has been found in a human outside of eastern China.
So far 11 people have died of the H7N9 bird flu strain since it was confirmed last month. 44 infections have been reported in total in Shanghai and the eastern provinces of Yhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui. The Chinese capital has now been added to the list since the infection of a seven year old girl.
The source of the H7N9 virus remains unknown. Investigations are being carried out by the Chinese authorities and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation.
The new virus has caused severe illness in most of those infected and has lead to fears that it could become easily transmissible.
