Thousands of immigrants across the United States have held coordinated demonstrations to pressure Congress to approve immigration measures that would give some 11 million illegal immigrants the chance of citizenship.
In Washington DC civil rights leader Congressman John Lewis led the rally, speaking to the assembled crowd he said:
“We want immigration reform and we want it now. We want it today, not tomorrow.”
Senators are expected to finish writing the controversial the immigration bill this week.
Opponents argue it will only encourage more illegal immigrants to enter and cause further financial problems for the cash-strapped government.
