Balkan war veteran kills 13 in Belgrade shooting spree

A shooting spree in a village near the Serbian capital, Belgrade, has left 13 people dead.

A veteran of the Balkan wars shot dead 12 people at the scene, with another dying later in hospital. Among the victims were the killer’s mother, his son and another two-year-old child. The shooter has been identified by police as Ljubisa Bogdanovic.

He also shot his wife and himself; both are said to be in a critical condition in hospital.

Those killed were six men, six women and a child; the shootings were carried out at around 05:00am local time in five neighbouring houses in Velika Ivanca, around 50 kilometres from Belgrade. “Most of the victims were shot in the head as they slept,” said local police chief Milorad Veljovic.

Veljovic added that Bogdanovic fought in the 1991-95 war in the former Yugoslavia, and that both he and his son had lost their jobs in Croatia last year. Serbian media reported that Bogdanovic’s father and uncle had both committed suicide in recent years.
