Greek police have sent to the prosecutor’s office a video showing the extreme right-wing party Golden Dawn’s parliamentary candidate Alexandros Plomaritis openly threatening foreigners.
In the video, which was filmed by a Greek student and broadcast on British television station Channel 4, Plomaritis says of foreigners “We will make lamps from their skin” and “We are ready to open the ovens”, an apparent reference to Nazi death camps during the Holocaust.
Golden Dawn’s parliamentary representative Ilias Kasidiaris said that the video was taken without the knowledge of the participants. “It was captured by some journalists without the people participating in it being told that they were recorded,” Kasidiaris stated.
The video is not the first time Golden Dawn has evoked public unrest regarding its social and political behaviour. In June 2012, Ilias Kasidiaris slapped Communist Party’s parliamentary representative Liana Kaneli during a political TV show. In September 2012, extreme right-wing activists attacked immigrants selling souvenirs and memorabilia during a religious festival in Rafina, in the outskirts of Athens. Ten days ago, a video emerged showing children aged between six and 10 attending classes of “national awakening” held by Golden Dawn’s members in Artemis Attica.
