Venezuelan military on streets to maintain order


Venezuela has deployed its army and police in the wake of President Hugo Chavez’s death, as the nation enters a period of political uncertainty and national mourning.

“The Bolivarian Armed Forces, protectors of the Constitution, laws and reglements, solidarises with the appeal made for the unity of the country.” Defence Minister Diego Molero, Venezuela’s Defence Minister said in a televised address.

Venezuela’s military chiefs appeared live on state TV to pledge their loyalty to Mr Maduro following the death of President Hugo Chavez.

Chavez had named Mr Maduro as his preferred successor.
