Maria Suelen Altheman of Brazil has won the Judo gold medal in the Women’s 78kg event.
In the final she was up against France’s Emilie Andeol.
As the fight began the Brazilian’s strategy was clear; catch Andeol on the counter-attack with an ura-nage.
The Frenchwoman continued her attack nonetheless and scored a waza-ari.
In the meantime she was penalised twice, however, giving the lead to Altheman, who managed to keep that scoreline to the finish.
In the men’s 100kg final Georgia’s Adam Okruashvili took on Momose Masaru of Japan.
In the first half of the final it looked as though the winner might be the one who incurred fewer penalty points.
But in the second half Momose stepped up a gear and launched a ferocious attack on the Georgian executing a perfect Tai-otoshi for ippon.
