A French archaeologist says he has discovered lost Incan treasure within the walls of Machu Picchu but Peruvian authorities will not give him permission to excavate.
Thierry Jamin claims his find would completely change how we see the fabled Incan citadel as it could be the biggest ever discovery of gold, silver and other precious metals.
But the Cusco region’s Cultural Director, David Ugarte, does not share his confidence.
“TJ seems to us to be more of an adventurer looking to find some treasure and not carry out any scientific research,” he said.
Authorities also say that any excavation work could damage the stability of the structure so for now Machu Picchu will retain its secrets.
