Venice carnival means costumes and masks

The waterways of Venice have been overrun by fantasy creatures to mark the opening of the city’s annual carnival. Balls will be held in Venetian palaces together with concerts and gondola parades during the 17-day event. The theme for 2013 is “Live in Colour”. The carnival leads up to Lent, the 40 day fast that precedes Easter.
