Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit has stepped down from his post as board chairman of Berlin’s new international airport after technical problems delayed the opening again.
Berlin Brandenburg was due to open in 2012, but the facility looks set to remain idle until 2014.
The cost of the project has doubled to a whopping four billion euros.
The delays, caused mainly by problems with the fire-safety system, have turned the airport and its city into a nationwide butt of jokes. Authorities fear the latest hold-up could harm the global reputation of German engineering.
