Dakar rally: Barreda wins stage 2

Spain’s Joan Barreda kept his composure to clinch the second stage of the Dakar rally in Pisco on Sunday.

The Husqvarna rider looked in great shape and edged out fellow countryman Joan Pedrero to stretch his lead atop the overall standings.

Australia’s Matt Fish produced a solid run but eventually had to settle for third place while France’s Cyril Despres lost over eight minutes after a disappointing day in Peru.

Meanwhile in the car category, the race’s most successful driver and defending champion Stephen Peterhansel grabbed his 60th special with yet another stunning performance.

The Frenchman now leads South Africa’s Giniel De Villiers by 2’38 in the overall standings with compatriot Ronan Chabot currently lying in third place.
