The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III arrived at the Church of the Nativity, the birth place of Jesus according to Christian tradition, in the West Bank town of Bethlehem to lead worshippers as they celebrated Christmas according to the Eastern Orthodox calendar.

In the Vatican Pope Benedict used his Epiphany mass to ordain four new archbishops and told the faithful to stand firm against those who want to change the fundamental teachings on faith and morals to conform with current thinking.

In Istanbul Orthodox Christians, after traditional mass, walked with Patriarch Bartholomew to the Golden Horn estuary to dive for a crucifix thrown by the Patriarch. A tradition that dates back to Byzantine times.
