A former Canadian diplomat who risked his life sheltering American’s during the 1979 Tehran hostage crisis has died.
John Sheardown, 88, passed away in Ottawa hospital on Sunday night.
Before he died, the Canadian city of Windsor, Ontario, declared a “John Sheardown Day”.
Sheardown took six US diplomats into his Tehran home, hiding them for 79 days during the crisis which lasted for 444 days.
Although he is not personally portrayed, the events are depicted in the Ben Affleck movie ‘Argo’.
