Egyptians protest at referendum process

Egyptians gather to march on the Presidential Palace and Tahrir Square in Cairo. They are angry at how the vote for the Islamist-backed national constitution is being handled.

Crowds began to form after the Justice Ministry ordered a probe into allegations of corruption during the first round of a referendum last weekend.

“Egypt is for Egyptians,” one man said, “whether they are Muslim or Christian. The rule of the Muslim Brotherhood is shameful and a betrayal to the nation. Mohammed Morsi is vain, the upper and lower houses of parliament are vain.”

57 percent of Egyptians voted yes in the first round last weekend. If the constitution passes next weekend, national elections will take place early next year.
