Three people have been killed after two apartment buildings collapsed in Palermo, the capital of Sicily.
Firefighters combing the rubble rescued a young girl.
Emergency services say that one elderly woman is unaccounted for.
Ten people were injured in the accident.
One witness described the moment the building went down:
“Firefighters were on the scene telling everyone to leave. Someone appeared at the second floor balcony and then it collapsed.”
The number of victims would have been far higher if the emergency services had not ordered an immediate evacuation of the buildings.
Residents say they heard strange noises and noted that cracks in the walls appeared to be getting bigger.
