Shock surrounds Newtown after school massacre

Holding hands or hugging each other for comfort –
post-traumatic scenes are now a familiar sight in the aftermath of such a tragedy but the shock of another brutal school killing never ceases.

Kaitlin Roig, a teacher at Sandy Hook described the horror of what she thought were her and pupils’ final moments.

“I’m thinking that I have to almost be their parent, like I have to tell them so I said to them, I need you to know that I love you all very much and that it’s going to be okay because I thought that was the last thing they were ever going to hear,” she said.

In a town where there has only been one murder in the last decade, for some such a tragedy is almost beyond belief.

“This town is 300 years old and this is probably the worst day in the history of this town. It’s hard to believe anything like this could happen in this town. It’s a very quiet town,” lamented Peter Alpi, Newtown resident. “It’s horrible that such evil exists in the United States and in Sandy Hook in particular. That’s the nature of the world we live in, I guess,” he added.

We may never find out what exactly happened or why but the pain and terror of what took place in Newtown will be felt right across America.

“Grief, sadness, devastation. The day after the horrendous tragedy, the people of Newtown start learning to cope with a new life – while more and more Americans are demanding tougher gun control.”
