Switzerland’s Lara Gut held her nerve to clinch her maiden World Cup downhill in Val D’isere on Friday.
The 21 year old, who was runner up at the 2009 world championships in the same French resort, completed the course in an impressive time of one minute and 19.75 seconds.
America’s Leanne Smith produced a solid run but it wasn’t to be for the 25 year old who eventually finished 16 seconds behind the leader with Switzerland’s Nadja Kamer completing the podium.
Slovenia’s Tina Maze, who finished 11th, still leads the overall standings ahead of Double Olympic champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch and America’s Lindsey Vonn.
