Multiple deaths reported at US primary school shooting

US media is reporting 27 people – 18 children and nine adults – have been killed by a gunman at a US primary school in the north-eastern state of Connecticut.

The death toll is attributed to law enforcement sources. If true that would be the worst school shooting in US history.

An entire classroom of children was unaccounted for following the shooting, The Hartford Courant newspaper reported, citing unnamed sources.
Students ranging from as young as five to 10 years old, were evacuated.

One eyewitness, who was attending a meeting in the school said that more than 100 shots were fired starting at around 9.30 am local time (14:30 GMT). She said the dead included the school principle and the school’s psychologist.

The authorities have said that one shooter is dead at the scene and two handguns have been recovered. CBS News reported the guman was the father of a student at the school.

“It was horrendous,” said parent Brenda Lebinski, who rushed to the school where her daughter is in the third grade. “Everyone was in hysterics – parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don’t know if they were shot, but they were bloodied.”
